Orchestra

Hello! The Washington High School Orchestra is excited that you are here. My name is Karla Chiarello and I have been the orchestra director at WHS for more then 20 years. I am a Sioux Falls native. I have my undergraduate from Augustana University and my masters in Music Education from Northern State University. I am also certified to teach Computer Science and carry an endorsement for teaching English Language Learners and have been known to teach in those areas as well. When I am not teaching orchestra at Washington High School you can find me playing as a regular member of the South Dakota Symphony double bass section where I have played for over 25 years.

I was once told that a career in music is for those whose soul will not let them do anything else. I guess that is why I do what I do.

Theater

Hello, my name is Michael Haddican, and I have been involved with the Washington High School Theater Department. During this time, I've served as the Technical Director and Artistic Director of Theater. The reason I direct theater is for the dreamers and the schemers of the world who want to find creativity in the everyday. I want to assist students in creating a space at Washington High School where they can express themselves that creates a sense of belonging, independence, mastery, and generosity.

Art

Hello! My name is Matt Schuldt and I am the Photography and Graphic Design teacher at Washington High School. I have taught for over 20 years in the Sioux Falls School District. I am the Department Chair for the Fine Arts program as well as the Gallery Director for WHS.

I received my undergraduate degree from Augustana University, and furthered my graduate studies at Southwest Minnesota State University. The reason I got into teaching was the fact that I have the ability to help students learn and appreciate art. I love the interaction of high school students and how they can come up with awesome ideas in an art setting.

In my classroom, I want students to feel safe when discussing ideas and presenting their artwork to their peers. "Go Warriors"
